Jogging Heart Benefits

Jogging is perhaps one of the more popular ways to keep physically fit. Not only is it a relatively inexpensive activity but it has a number of health benefits. One of the major health benefits is jogging heart benefits.

Jogging heart benefits arise from the simple fact that jogging is a cardiovascular exercise. Cardiovascular exercise or cardio in short, is exercise that elevates the heart rate and keeps it elevated for an extended period of time. Cardiovascular exercise is also known as aerobic exercise.

The heart is a muscle and like any other muscle in the body it does benefit from some exercise. Regular exercise makes the heart and other muscles stronger. Cardio-respiratory endurance simply means the efficiency with which the heart, the lungs and the blood vessels move oxygen throughout the body and to the muscles. Cardiovascular fitness is also defined by how efficient the muscles in the body are at utilizing the oxygen they receive.

Another one of the jogging heart benefits is that it increases the levels of good cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL). HDLs are manufactured in the liver and their main aim is to remove bad cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and other fats from organs and tissues and move them back to the liver for destruction. Jogging also reduces LDL as it normally results in weight loss. Obesity is one of the risk factors for high cholesterol levels.

If the excess cholesterol is not removed from the blood vessels in the heart, it may turn into plaque and result in a condition called atherosclerosis. The plaque hardens inside the blood vessels causing them to narrow and constrict. This limits the amount of blood that can be pumped through the blood vessel while at the same time causes the heart to work harder to pump blood through these narrowed vessels. This will result in a higher blood pressure. High blood pressure is dangerous as it may lead to stroke or heart attack.

One of the related jogging heart benefits is a reduction in the risk of heart disease. This risk is reduced because jogging makes the heart stronger. A stronger heart results from several factors which include higher levels of HDL, normal blood pressure levels and a reduced level of body fat.
