Jogging In Hot Weather

Some people are of the opinion that jogging in hot weather is good as it helps you burn more calories and therefore lose more weight. Strictly speaking, this is may not be the case. While it is true you will most likely weigh less after your run, this is simply because you will have lost water weight which you will gain back when you drink water.

However the idea that jogging in hot weather may help burn more calories need not be dismissed. Some people are of the idea that because the heart has to work harder to pump more blood to cool the overheated muscles, you are likely to burn more calories than in cooler temperatures. This is because the heart rate is more elevated than it would be at the same intensity at lower temperatures. There are also the additional benefits of more fat burn and a stronger heart.

Another advantage of jogging in hot weather is that it helps with conditioning your body for more adverse temperatures. This is particularly of great help for people training for marathons and such.

Even though jogging in hot weather has its benefits, it can be unsafe due to the risk of dehydration. There is also the chance of the body overheating which can result in heat cramps, heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Heat cramps happen because the body has lost a significant amount of minerals through sweating. Heat stroke and heat exhaustion are quite similar except that heat stroke is more severe and can even be fatal.

Some of the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke include dizziness, nausea, weakness in the legs, cold, clammy skin with excessive sweating (in heat stroke, the individual stops sweating and body temperature can reach as high as 104 degrees) and heart palpitation. A person experiencing a heat stroke will also feel disoriented, may suffer seizures or convulsions or lose consciousness. They may also slip into a coma. Such a person will need immediate medical attention.

If you would like to start jogging in hot weather, there are a number of things to keep in mind to stay safe.

1 - Dress appropriately – Your clothing should be loose fitting and brightly colored to keep you as cool as possible.

2 - Keep hydrated – This is perhaps the most important thing to remember when you are jogging in hot weather. This is to reduce the risk of dehydration. You need to drink water before, during and after your jog. You can also benefit by pouring water over your head and on your clothing to help keep cooler during your run.

3 - Pace yourself – It is important not to do too much too soon. You should allow your body to acclimatize to hot weather conditions so that you do not put too much strain on it during your jogging exercise.
