Running is probably the best form of exercise. This is because it is easy to do and rather inexpensive. Plus, it does not require any exercise equipment and has numerous health benefits. A large number of people run to lose weight but some others are running for health and fitness.

It may be argued however, that running to lose weight is the same as running for health and fitness, particularly in the backdrop of an increasingly overweight population. There is also a smaller category of people who run simply for the joy of it. Irrespective of the reason, the benefits accrued from running are the same.

If you are running for health and fitness, or for any other reason, it is very important to do so properly. Poor running technique may lead to serious injuries. Running properly can be taught as it is a skill, not a talent. It is important to keep a few pointers in mind. For one, it is important not to land too heavily on your feet. You are actually supposed to land on the balls of your feet and not on your entire foot.

Another important thing that is needed when you are running for health and fitness is the proper gear, most importantly your running shoes. Running can be quite stressful on the body, particularly on the joints. It is therefore crucial to run with proper shoes that are designed to absorb some of the impact. You should also change these shoes every so often as their ability to absorb impact diminishes with use. And it goes without saying that your running shoes should fit properly.

Running for health and fitness are not the only benefits that can be achieved. Running results in better heart health, it relieves stress, increased bone health through increasing bone density, better body coordination and improved mood. Running achieves better heart health by increasing the size and elasticity of the blood vessels so that there is more efficient pumping of blood throughout the body. This in turn lowers blood pressure. Lung capacity is also improved so that they become more efficient in making use of oxygen and more efficient at getting rid of carbon dioxide.

Running for health and fitness is also good for the immune system as it boosts the production of lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are white blood cells that protect the body from disease and infection. Other benefits include increasing self-confidence and gaining a more positive body image from the resultant weight loss and muscle toning. Running is also said to be good for beauty as it can put a glow in your face and slows aging.

Running for health and fitness is more enjoyable and more sustainable than running for weight loss. This is because emphasis is not so much on calories burned or distance covered. For this reason, it is less than a chore and more fun.
